Ohver arvab, et pangatöötaja identifitseerib teda, kuid taustal logib kurjategija tema internetipanka sisse ja algatab sealt makseid (tihtipeale välismakseid), katkestab hoiuseid või taotleb väikelaenu. Samal ajal saabuvad ohvri telefoni teated Smart-ID või Mobiil-ID tehingu allkirjastamiseks. Kui ohver oma PIN2-koodi sisestab, siis on kurjategijad oma eesmärgi täitnud ning üritavad ohvri kontol teha veel nii palju tehinguid kui võimalik.
Lisaks Swedbankile on ka Riigi Infosüsteemi Amet saanud teateid SMS-ide kohta, kus palutakse vajutada sõnumis toodud lingil. Avaneb näiliselt pangaga sarnane leht, mis on aga võltsitud ning mille eesmärk on saada ohver sisestama oma kasutajatunnust ja PIN-koode.

Kõne pangast ei pruugi alati tähendada petukõnet. Pangatöötajad helistavad ka ise klientidele, kuid nad ei küsi PIN-koode ning suhtlevad kliendiga tema emakeeles. Telefoni tulevaid autentimis- või allkirjastamisteateid ei tohi kindlasti kinnitada oma PIN-koodidega, kui klient ise samal ajal mingit tehingut ei tee.
